McLaren Applied Technologies wins prestigious Automotive Electronics and Power Electronics categories at last night’s TechWorks Awards

Only company on the night to receive two awards

Pascal Arnold and Dr Stephen Lambert receive the 2018 Automotive Electronics Innovation and Excellence Award for McLaren Applied Technologies

McLaren Applied Technologies was the only company to take two awards at last weeks TechWorks Awards. The company took the Automotive- and Power-Electronics Innovation categories.

Both awards were presented for the innovation behind the organisation’s CTU-400kW e-axle.

The awards celebrate the year’s key electronics innovations, people and companies from across the UK and Ireland. The TechWorks Awards have run annually since 2001 – originally branded as the NMI Awards.

The category specifically recognises today’s intensely competitive automotive market and the fact that it is absolutely essential for new innovative products to enable end user requirements of functionality and safety within a tight window of market opportunity, while meeting exceptionally high quality and reliability standards.

The award was presented by the renowned Journalist John Sergeant, who – when presenting for the Automotive Award said: “The high quality of applications provided a challenge for our judges in selecting the winner. In the end this year’s winner was chosen for their strong adoption of new and innovative technology in their CTU-400 (400kW) e-axle achieving an efficient outstanding performance traction unit for Automotive Electrification through collaboration with partners Integral Powertrain and Hewland Engineering.”

On presenting the Power Award, Sergeant added: “Power electronics contributes nearly £50bn annually to the UK economy and is a key enabler at the heart of electrification in multiple sectors.

And that the judges were, In particular impressed by the the “power electronics integration into the e-axle demonstrates early market leadership and impact in the drive for higher levels of integration in power electronics, motors and drives.”

The awards were held at a prestigious venue near London’s Tower Bridge.

 

A multi-year Memorandum Of Understanding signed between Meridian and TechWorks

A multi-year Memorandum Of Understanding signed between Meridian and TechWorks, the UK’s industry association for the deep tech community, will promote collaboration on critical and valuable areas in the development of connected and autonomous vehicles. Codeplay Software to Receive Investment to Enable Safe AI for Automotive

Foresight has committed £2.1M ($3M) into Edinburgh based software company, Codeplay, to grow its world-leading team with safety specialist engineers needed for safe and reliable artificial intelligence in automotive systems.

The commitment, of which Foresight Williams Technology EIS Fund has already invested £1.05 million, will enable Codeplay to extend its ComputeSuite™ products for integration into advanced driver assist systems (ADAS) and autonomous vehicles. This will support C++ software programmers in developing their latest vision and AI algorithms then implement on state-of-the-art specialised AI processors. Codeplay’s solution will accelerate development time and provide a safe and verified platform for faster deployment.

Last year, Codeplay announced a relationship with Renesas, a leading Japanese semiconductor company, to enable their next generation of advanced automotive processors. Codeplay is already demonstrating complex vision processing applications running on their R-Car products H3, V3M and recently announced V3H.

ADAS systems provide surround monitoring around the car features such as adaptive cruise control and collision avoidance, self-parking and driver monitoring. These functions are now common-place and are being adopted into most new cars produced providing extra safety systems and reducing accidents.

Since 2002 Codeplay has developed complex software components for gaming consoles, mobile phones and other complex devices. The ComputeSuite products enable software programmers to develop leading-edge applications using well known and understood techniques. Codeplay has already established a global reputation and worked with most of the largest processor companies.

Codeplay is a real home-grown, Scottish success story. Codeplay was founded by Andrew Richards and Dr Jens-Uwe Dolinsky. Andrew started his career in the 8-bit days writing games for the ZX Spectrum from home, progressing up to writing large console games on the Sega Megadrive and PlayStation. Ricardo announce White Paper on The Automation Revolution Coming to Mobility and Transport by 2025

Codeplay Hosting AESIN’s ADAS & AV Controls Meeting

The automotive industry is rapidly moving towards increased levels of automation, and in order to make this possible, Codeplay are working to bring open standard based frameworks to automotive Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). By engaging with a range of groups our team can provide valuable input to the industry, and also learn from the industry as a whole. One of the groups that Codeplay is engaging with is the Automotive Electronic Systems Innovation Network (AESIN).

As part of TechWorks, AESIN is a dedicated UK initiative focused on the accelerated and advanced delivery of Electronic Systems into vehicles and infrastructure operated by the UK Trade Association. It is a network for everyone in the automotive supply chain to progress the Automotive Electronics Industry in the UK to discuss and importantly to facilitate world-beating innovation by enabling collaboration, sharing of expert knowledge and best practice in a noncompetitive and effective environment.

Codeplay participates in AESIN’s ADAS & AV Control group

 

During January Codeplay hosts the AESIN Control sub-group meeting for ADAS and Autonomous Vehicle (AV) hosted by Charles Macfarlane, Codeplay’s VP of Marketing, in the company’s office next to Edinburgh Castle.

 

The AESIN Control sub-group meeting brings together industry leaders providing expertise in ADAS and AV vision processing intelligence and will help to align on the industry’s strategy towards autonomous vehicles.

Codeplay, experts in high-performance compilers and software optimization for multi-core processing, is gaining a reputation for bringing its development frameworks to the automotive industry benefiting intelligent ADAS solutions. This reputation is greatly enhanced by Codeplay’s recent partnership with Renesas and participation in various AESIN activities, including a presentation at AESIN’s ADAS & AV seminar at Warwick University in front of a large audience. During the seminar in December, Codeplay’s Safety-Critical Software Development Lead Illya Rudkin presented on “Open Standards for ADAS Vision and Machine Learning.” This presentation outlined how Advanced Driver Assistance Systems can be developed to meet the levels of automation set out by SAE, and how open standards will help to achieve this faster.

The members of AESIN come from a broad set of disciplines across the Automotive Electronics supply chain that includes OEMs, Tier 1 and Tier 2 component makers, and system software developers. Unsurprisingly there are numerous areas for development in vehicles and the infrastructure systems to support them, so AESIN have five working groups. Codeplay joined the ADAS and AV Control group to facilitate and promote the advantages of using Khronos open standards in complex software stacks such as those used to implement vision analysis and machine learning. This particular “Control” group has around 60 members spread across other sub-control groups.

OEMs and Tier 1 automotive companies are beginning to realize that there are opportunities and solutions outside their existing domain and Codeplay is being recognized for the expertise and solutions we can provide by participating within AESIN.
